The short answer
Pick Christmas if the markets and a New Year's Eve countdown are the reason you're going, and you already have your visa or can get an appointment very soon.
Pick spring if you want warmer days and more daylight for exploring, a slightly lower price, and no rush on the visa. For most first-timers who haven't started their visa yet, spring is the more practical choice.

Weather and daylight
This is the biggest practical difference. In December, you have about 8 hours of daylight and it's dark by mid-afternoon. In April, you have about 13 hours at the start of the month and nearly 15 by the end, so a walking tour doesn't have to race the sunset.
| City | Dec high / low | Apr high / low | Sunset, 24 Dec | Sunset, 2 Apr |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Amsterdam | 6°C / 2°C | 14°C / 5°C | 4:30 pm | 8:15 pm |
| Berlin | 4°C / 0°C | 13°C / 4°C | 3:55 pm | 7:40 pm |
| Prague | 2°C / −3°C | 13°C / 2°C | 4:05 pm | 7:35 pm |
| Budapest | 4°C / −1°C | 17°C / 7°C | 3:55 pm | 7:15 pm |
Sunshine follows the same pattern. These cities average about 158–183 hours of sunshine in April and only 37–51 in December. Those are monthly averages, so the 31 March departure may feel cooler than the April figures, and the late-April departure warmer. Spring weather can also change quickly, so pack layers and a rain jacket either way. If you're on the Paris to Prague trip, Paris averages 16°C / 7°C in April.

What you'd actually be doing
At Christmas
You get the Amsterdam Light Festival and a Christmas canal cruise, arrive in Berlin on Christmas Day, go to a pre-New Year party in Prague, and spend New Year's Eve hopping between Budapest's ruin bars. Many of Berlin's smaller markets have closed by the time we arrive, but the big central ones are still open. Our Christmas markets guide has the dates, and the New Year's Eve comparison explains why we count down in Budapest.
In spring
The core is the same: a canal cruise, the Heineken Experience, Zaanse Schans, the East Side Gallery, a Prague pub crawl with an open bar, ruin bars and a thermal bath in Budapest. There's no festive programme, but the outdoor parts of the trip are far more comfortable. All three departures are in Amsterdam during Keukenhof's tulip season, although Keukenhof itself isn't included. If you'd rather start in Paris, that route swaps Budapest for three nights in Paris.
Crowds and holidays
Christmas to New Year is a peak holiday period, so expect busy markets and packed city centres. In Berlin, 25 and 26 December are public holidays, and market hours can be shorter on those days.
Spring is usually calmer than the December holidays, though Amsterdam gets busy in tulip season. Two dates are worth knowing. The Paris to Prague trip starts on Easter Sunday, 28 March, and the next day is a public holiday in France. On the 28 April departure, you reach Berlin on 1 May, a public holiday in Germany. Prague's Easter markets aren't confirmed for 2027 yet and will probably be over by the time our groups arrive in April, so don't plan around them.
Price
Right now, the land package for spring costs ₹5,350 less with taxes: ₹1,33,750 against ₹1,39,100 for Christmas. Our Christmas trip cost breakdown puts the December total at roughly ₹2.75–3.5 lakh per person, with flights at about ₹80,000–1,20,000 of that. We haven't priced spring fares line by line, so compare your own dates before you decide. The visa fee is the same for both: about ₹11,000–12,500.
Visa timing: the deciding factor for many
Christmas: departure is less than eight weeks away, and our recommended window for booking an appointment has already passed. The legal last day to apply is about 7 December, but that leaves no margin for a document request. Check that a slot is available before you pay. Our Christmas Schengen guide has the details.
Spring: we suggest booking the appointment 10–12 weeks before you fly, which means January for the March departures and February for the 28 April one. The spring Schengen guide has dates for each departure and which consulate to apply to.

FAQ
Is it better to visit Europe in spring or in December?
It depends on why you're going. Pick December if Christmas markets and a New Year's Eve countdown are the point of the trip, and you're happy with cold days and sunset around 4 pm. Pick spring if you want to spend the day walking around the cities: April highs are about 13–17°C, compared with 2–6°C in December, and there's roughly four times as much sunshine.
Is a Europe trip cheaper in spring than at Christmas?
On our trips, yes, at today's prices. The Christmas land package is ₹1,30,000 till 22 November, and the spring packages are ₹1,25,000 in their first price tier. Add 5% GST and 2% TCS and that's ₹1,39,100 vs ₹1,33,750. Flights are priced separately and move a lot, so compare fares for your exact dates before deciding.
Can I still get a Schengen visa for a 22 December trip?
Possibly, but it's tight. Our advice was to book an appointment by early October. The legal last day to apply is 15 days before departure, about 7 December, and one request for extra documents at that stage could mean missing the trip. Check that appointment slots are available before you pay for anything. The spring trips have far more room: the appointment window opens in January or February depending on your departure.
Will I see tulips on a spring Europe trip?
All three spring departures are in Amsterdam while Keukenhof is open (18 March – 9 May 2027). Keukenhof is not included in the package, so you'd add it yourself using free time. The countryside day is the most natural slot. Our Keukenhof guide covers tickets and how to fit it in.
Is the nightlife as good in spring as it is at New Year?
The bars, clubs and ruin bars are open all year, and the spring Amsterdam to Budapest itinerary has a pub crawl with an open bar in Prague, a ruin-bar night in Budapest and optional Sparty. What you don't get is the one-night-only energy of a New Year's Eve countdown. If that's the part you want most, go in December.
Are there any public holidays to watch out for on the spring trips?
Yes, on two departures. The Paris to Prague trip starts on Easter Sunday, 28 March 2027, and 29 March is Easter Monday, a public holiday in France. On the 28 April departure, you arrive in Berlin on 1 May, a public holiday in Germany. Expect some shops to be closed on those days.
Pick your season
Twelve days and four cities, with a Trip Leader and a group. Christmas is ₹1,30,000 till 22 November. Spring starts at ₹1,25,000, and that first price runs till 28 December on Paris to Prague and 31 December on the 31 March Amsterdam to Budapest departure. 5% GST and 2% TCS are extra.
