The short answer
Pick Bali if the New Year's Eve party is the reason you're going. Our Bali group rings in 2027 on Gili Trawangan, an island with no cars where the whole beach counts down together. Pick Sri Lanka if you'd rather have dry-season weather, a free visa and a short flight, with New Year by the sea in Mirissa and a safari and a surf lesson in the same week.
On price there's barely anything in it. Both trips sit between ₹65,000 and ₹69,000 land-only, so the decision comes down to the kind of week you want. Sri Lanka is also having a moment with Indian travellers: 437,414 Indians visited from January to September 2026, up 16.6%, making India its biggest market by far.

New Year's Eve itself
Sri Lanka: Mirissa, by the sea
Day 5 is 31 December. You surf in the morning, rest in the afternoon and head out with the crew at night for music, drinks and a midnight countdown on the coast. Depending on the final lineup, the party is at Mirissa Beach, Secret Jungle Party or The Doctor's House, and the shots are on us. 1 January is a deliberately slow beach day.
Bali: Gili T, the whole island
Day 4 is 31 December, and by then you've had a night on the island to warm up. The day is free to cycle, swim or dive. At night your Trip Leader runs a bar crawl that ends at the island countdown, with fireworks and the whole beach celebrating together. 1 January is a snorkelling trip to three spots around the Gilis, with turtles and the underwater statues.
Honest take: Gili T is the bigger, louder New Year. Mirissa is a great beach party, but it's a smaller scene, and the Sri Lanka trip spreads its highlights across the week rather than building everything around one night.
Visa and entry: Sri Lanka is simpler
Sri Lanka needs an ETA, and for Indians it's been free since 25 May 2026. You apply online on eta.gov.lk and get 30 days. Approval usually takes a day or two, but for a 27 December departure apply by about 15 December. Our Sri Lanka ETA guide walks through it.
Bali isn't visa-free for Indians. You pay for a visa on arrival, IDR 500,000 (about ₹2,700), at the airport or online beforehand as an e-VOA. It's valid 30 days. On top of that there's the IDR 150,000 (about ₹800) Bali tourist levy, and you fill in the free All Indonesia arrival card in the three days before you land. None of it is hard, but it's three steps instead of one.
Sri Lanka terms from the official ETA site, checked 16 October 2026. Bali visa and levy figures from Wego and the arrival card from the Bali Hotels Association. Check the official sites before you travel.
Weather: Sri Lanka has the edge in December
Our Sri Lanka route runs through the south coast and hill country, where December is the start of the dry season. Expect hot, sunny beach days around 30°C in Mirissa and Galle, and cool, clear mornings in Ella for Little Adam's Peak. The full region-by-region picture is in our Sri Lanka in December guide.
Bali in December is in its wet season. It's hot (around 26–30°C) and showers are frequent but usually short and heavy, often in the afternoon or evening. It rarely rains all day, and beach clubs and the NYE night go ahead, but pack a light rain jacket and expect the sea to be choppier on the Gili ferry days.
Typical averages, not a forecast. Bali figures from Bali.com; Sri Lanka from Red Dot Tours.
The rest of the week
Sri Lanka: nature and a road trip
Hike Little Adam's Peak, see Ravana Falls and Nine Arches Bridge in Ella, do a Yala jeep safari, watch the sunset from Coconut Tree Hill, take a surf lesson in Mirissa, then walk Galle Fort and finish with a casino night in Colombo. You cover a lot of ground by road, so there are several long drive days.
Bali: beach clubs and an island
Uluwatu Temple at sunset, three nights on Gili T with snorkelling, a muddy jungle ATV ride in Ubud, a coffee plantation and Tegenungan Waterfall, a day at Cretya Day Club, a Balinese massage and a final sunset at Finns Beach Club. It's one night longer, with two ferry crossings.
The verdict
Pick Sri Lanka if…
- You want sunshine in December, not a gamble on showers.
- You're flying from South or West India and want a short flight.
- You'd rather not pay for a visa or deal with a levy.
- A safari, a hike and a surf lesson sound as good as the party.
Pick Bali if…
- New Year's Eve is the headline and you want the biggest party.
- You want beach clubs, island life and an extra night.
- A few rainy afternoons won't bother you.
- You'd like the lower land price per night.

FAQ
Is Sri Lanka or Bali better for New Year's Eve?
Bali, if the party is the point. Our Bali group spends 31 December on Gili Trawangan with bar hopping, an island-wide countdown and fireworks on the beach. Sri Lanka, if you want better weather and less hassle. Our Sri Lanka group celebrates by the sea in Mirissa, the south coast is in its dry season, the visa is free and the flight is short.
Which is cheaper for New Year, Sri Lanka or Bali?
Close to a draw, and it depends on when you book. Right now Bali New Year is ₹65,000 land-only for 8 nights and Sri Lanka New Year is ₹67,000 for 7 nights, rising to ₹69,000 after 27 October. Per night Bali is a little cheaper. Add the Bali visa and levy (about ₹3,500) and generally pricier flights, and Sri Lanka usually comes out level or ahead on the total.
Do Indians need a visa for Sri Lanka or Bali?
Sri Lanka needs an ETA, which has been free for Indians since 25 May 2026 and is applied for online on eta.gov.lk before you fly. Bali needs a visa on arrival costing IDR 500,000 (about ₹2,700), payable at the airport or online in advance as an e-VOA, plus the separate IDR 150,000 Bali tourist levy and a free All Indonesia arrival card.
Does it rain in Bali in December?
Yes. December is in Bali's wet season, with frequent but usually short, heavy showers, often in the afternoon or evening, and temperatures around 26–30°C. It rarely rains all day, and the trip still works, but expect some wet afternoons and choppier seas for the Gili ferry.
Is Sri Lanka good in December?
The south coast and hill country are, which is where our New Year route goes. December is the start of the dry season in Mirissa, Galle and Ella. The north and east get the northeast monsoon, which is why the trip runs south.
How long is the flight from India to Sri Lanka vs Bali?
Sri Lanka is much closer. Colombo is roughly 1.5 hours from Bengaluru or Chennai, 2–2.5 hours from Mumbai and around 4 hours from Delhi. Bali is about 6 hours non-stop from Bengaluru and 7–8 hours non-stop from Delhi, and many itineraries connect through Singapore, Kuala Lumpur or Bangkok. Schedules change, so check with the airline when you book.
Can I join either trip solo?
Yes. Both are group trips with a dedicated Trip Leader, and both start with an ice-breaker on day one, so solo travellers are placed into the group from the first evening rather than left to find people on their own.
