The short answer
Sri Lanka has two monsoons that hit opposite sides of the island at different times of year. In December, the northeast monsoon is soaking the north and east, while the south coast, west coast and hill country are heading into their dry season. That makes December one of the best months for Mirissa, Galle, Ella and Yala, and one of the worst for Jaffna and Trincomalee.
It's also when Sri Lanka's peak season begins, and more of those visitors are coming from India than ever. India was the only major market that grew in January to September 2026, up 16.6% to 437,414 arrivals, while other markets fell. Book December stays and trips early.
December weather, region by region
South and west coast
Best in DecemberMirissa, Galle, Ahangama, Hiriketiya, Colombo
The southwest monsoon is long gone and the coast's dry season is starting. Expect sunny, hot beach days (around 30°C) and calm-enough seas for surfing lessons and boat trips. The odd short shower is still possible early in the month, and the coast gets drier as December goes on.
Hill country
Good, pack a layerElla, Nuwara Eliya
Mostly settled weather with clear mornings, which is when you want to be on Little Adam's Peak or at Nine Arches Bridge. Afternoons can cloud over. Nights are properly cool: Ella is mild, but Nuwara Eliya can drop to single digits, so bring a fleece or light jacket.
Yala and the deep south
GoodYala National Park
Dry and open for safaris. Yala's Blocks 1 and 2 were closed from 14 September to 15 October 2026 because of drought, so they will have reopened well before any December trip.
Cultural Triangle
Doable, expect rainSigiriya, Dambulla
This is the one inland area where December is actually wet. November and December are its rainiest months (Sigiriya averages roughly 250 mm in December), usually as afternoon downpours. Climb Sigiriya early in the morning and carry a rain jacket.
North and east
Skip in DecemberJaffna, Trincomalee, Pasikudah, Arugam Bay
The northeast monsoon is in full swing. Trincomalee averages around 15 rainy days in December, the east coast seas are rough, and Arugam Bay's surf season doesn't start until around April. These coasts are at their best from roughly April to September, the reverse of the south.
Weather patterns are typical averages, not a forecast. Rainfall figure for Sigiriya from Red Dot Tours; Trincomalee rainy days from kimkim; Yala closure from Newsfirst.
What about Jaffna?
Jaffna has become one of the most-searched Sri Lankan destinations among Indian travellers this year, and it's worth a trip: Tamil temples, Nallur, the islands off the peninsula, and food you won't find down south. But it sits right in the path of the northeast monsoon, which runs from roughly October to January.
In December that means regular heavy rain, and the east coast beaches nearby (Trincomalee, Nilaveli, Pasikudah) have rough seas. Save Jaffna and the east for April to September, when the south coast is the wet one. If your trip is in December, stay south and in the hills. That's the reason both of our December departures run there.

Four more things to know about December
Whale season starts
Blue whale and dolphin trips off Mirissa typically run from around November to April, with December to March usually the best stretch. Boats go out early morning.
Poya day on 23 December
Every full moon is a Buddhist holiday when alcohol sales stop. The December one, Unduvap Poya, falls on Wednesday 23 December 2026, between our two departures, so neither group loses a night out.
It's peak season
The last two weeks of December are the busiest and most expensive of the year on the south coast. Rooms and New Year's Eve events book up, and prices rise as departure gets closer.
Get travel insurance
Storms at the tail of the monsoon season do happen. Cyclone Ditwah hit the island in late November 2025, causing floods and landslides inland. Insurance with trip-disruption cover is worth it for any December trip.
Visa: a free ETA, applied for before you fly
Indian passport holders need an ETA (Electronic Travel Authorisation), which is currently free and covers a 30-day tourist stay. Apply on the official site, eta.gov.lk, before you travel, since airlines check it at boarding. Lookalike agent sites charge US$25–50 for the same free form, so ignore them.
FAQ
Is December a good time to visit Sri Lanka?
Yes, if you go south. December is the start of the dry season on the south and west coasts (Mirissa, Galle, Colombo) and the hill country (Ella, Nuwara Eliya), and it's the beginning of Sri Lanka's peak tourist season. The north and east, including Jaffna and Trincomalee, get the northeast monsoon in December, so they're better saved for April to September.
Does it rain in Sri Lanka in December?
In the north and east, a lot. On the south and west coasts, very little, mostly short showers early in the month. In the hill country you can get afternoon cloud and the odd shower. The Cultural Triangle (Sigiriya, Dambulla) is the exception inland: November and December are its wettest months, so plan for afternoon downpours there.
Is Jaffna worth visiting in December?
Not as a beach or sightseeing trip. Jaffna is in the far north and gets the northeast monsoon from roughly October to January, so December brings regular heavy rain. If you want Jaffna, go between about April and September. For a December trip, the south coast and hill country are the dry side of the island.
How cold is Ella in December?
Days are pleasant, usually low-to-mid 20s °C. Mornings and nights are cool, and Nuwara Eliya, higher up, can drop to single digits at night. A fleece or light jacket is enough; you don't need winter clothing.
Do Indians need a visa for Sri Lanka in December 2026?
You need an ETA (Electronic Travel Authorisation), but for Indian passport holders it's currently free and covers a 30-day tourist stay. Apply online on the official site, eta.gov.lk, before you fly, since airlines check it at boarding. Avoid third-party sites that charge a fee for what is a free application.
Which Party Passport trips go to Sri Lanka in December?
Two. The Sri Lanka Trip runs 15–21 December 2026 (Dambulla, Sigiriya, Nuwara Eliya, Ella, Ahangama, Colombo), and Sri Lanka New Year runs 27 December 2026 to 3 January 2027 (Ella, Yala, Mirissa, Galle, Colombo), with New Year's Eve on the coast at Mirissa. Both stick to the dry south and centre of the island.
Ring in 2027 on the dry side
Sri Lanka New Year is ₹67,000 until 27 October 2026. See the full itinerary, or look at the 15–21 December trip and the 2027 departures.
