The short answer
Baku does New Year as a big public city celebration, not a club night. The city's official fireworks go up over the bay at Seaside National Park, the central stretch of Baku Boulevard, and tens of thousands of people fill the waterfront and the central streets to watch. The Flame Towers and the skyline are lit up behind it.
It's also a long holiday. 31 December is World Azerbaijanis Solidarity Day, and 1 and 2 January are the New Year holidays, so the whole city is off work for three days. The catch is the weather: it's cold and windy at midnight, so dress for it.
What the night actually looks like
The fireworks
The city government has held its New Year fireworks at Seaside National Park in recent years, watched from the boulevard and the streets around it. Get there early for a spot by the water. The 2026 schedule hadn't been announced as of October.
The crowds
The boulevard and Fountains Square get packed in the hour before midnight. It's a festive, mixed crowd of families and friend groups. Stick together and agree a meeting point, because phone signal can get patchy in a crowd that size.
The decorations
Baku goes big on lights in December. Fountains Square has a New Year tree and a winter fair with food and gift stalls, and holiday markets pop up along the main streets. You'll walk through all of it on our 1 January Old City day.
Two countdowns
Baku is 1.5 hours behind India. India hits midnight at 10:30 PM Baku time, so you can call home for India's New Year, then head out for Baku's own countdown 90 minutes later.
How cold is it?
Late-December days in Baku average roughly 7–10°C, and it's colder by midnight. Winters are fairly dry, so rain is unlikely to spoil the night, but Baku is called the city of winds for a reason. On the open waterfront the Caspian wind makes it feel several degrees colder.
- A proper winter jacket, not just a hoodie.
- A beanie, gloves and a scarf for the hour you'll stand by the water.
- Comfortable shoes with grip. You'll be on your feet at Gobustan that same morning.

What's included on the night, and what isn't
To be straight about it: the evening of 31 December is free in the itinerary. There's no ticketed party or gala dinner in the package price. What you do get is a 5-star hotel on the seafront, a trip leader with the group, and a city that throws its own free party on the waterfront.
- The free option: dinner in town, then the boulevard for the fireworks. It costs nothing beyond dinner and a taxi.
- The paid option: many Baku hotels and restaurants run ticketed New Year gala dinners. These are at your own cost and sell out, so tell us early if you want one.
- Getting back: the hotel is a short taxi ride from the central boulevard. Ride-hailing apps work in Baku, but expect surge prices and a wait just after midnight, or walk part of the way along the seafront.
Before you go
- Visa: Indians need an Azerbaijan e-Visa (US$20 state fee, 3 working days). The holidays don't count as working days, so apply by early December. Our Azerbaijan e-Visa guide has the steps.
- Money: carry some Azerbaijani manat for taxis, fair stalls and tips. Cards work widely in hotels, malls and restaurants, but fair stalls are often cash only.
- Food: Azerbaijani food is meat-heavy, but vegetarians do fine with greens or pumpkin qutab, salads, bread and cheese, and central Baku has several Indian restaurants. Book New Year's Eve dinner ahead, wherever you go.
- Drinks: Azerbaijan is Muslim-majority but secular, and alcohol is easy to find in bars, restaurants and hotels in Baku.

FAQ
Is Baku good for New Year's Eve?
Yes, if you want a city New Year rather than a beach party. Baku puts on a big public fireworks display over the bay at Seaside National Park (the central boulevard) on the night of 31 December, the streets and squares are decorated and lit, and 31 December, 1 January and 2 January are all public holidays, so the whole city is in holiday mode. The trade-off is the cold: expect single-digit temperatures at midnight with wind off the Caspian.
Where are the New Year fireworks in Baku?
In recent years the city's official New Year fireworks have been held over the bay at Seaside National Park, the central stretch of Baku Boulevard, and watched by crowds there and along the city's central streets. The 2026 plan hadn't been announced as of October 2026, so treat the location as what's happened the last few years rather than a confirmed schedule.
How cold is Baku on New Year's Eve?
Daytime averages in late December are roughly 7–10°C, and it's colder by midnight. Baku is nicknamed the city of winds, and the wind off the Caspian makes the waterfront feel noticeably colder than the number on your phone. It's usually dry, but pack a proper warm jacket, a beanie and gloves for the fireworks.
What time is midnight in Baku in India?
Baku is 1.5 hours behind India (UTC+4 vs UTC+5:30). India hits midnight at 10:30 PM Baku time, and Baku's midnight is 1:30 AM in India. So you can call home for India's New Year and still have 90 minutes before your own countdown.
Is a New Year's Eve party or dinner included in Party Passport's Baku trip?
No. The evening of 31 December is free in the itinerary, and there's no ticketed party or gala dinner in the package price. The easy plan is dinner in town and then the boulevard for the free fireworks. If you want a ticketed gala dinner at a hotel or restaurant, that's at your own cost, and we can suggest options closer to the date.
Are shops and attractions open on 1 and 2 January in Baku?
1 and 2 January are public holidays, so offices and banks are closed and some shops keep holiday hours. The places on our 1–2 January plan (the Old City, Nizami Street, Fountains Square, Ateshgah and Yanar Dag) are tourist areas that stay busy over the holidays, and the malls open as usual.
