The short answer
Hoi An is a great place for New Year's Eve if you want atmosphere, not a rave. The Old Town glows with silk lanterns every night, the Hoai River fills with small boats and floating paper lanterns, and riverside bars spill onto the street. The town also puts on a free open-air show. To welcome 2026 it was a gala at the An Hoi Sculpture Garden with traditional and modern music and a low-altitude fireworks display, according to Da Nang's official tourism site.
What it isn't: a ticketed beach party or a big club night. It's crowded, festive and very pretty, and it ends earlier than Saigon or Bangkok would. Our Vietnam New Year group is in Hoi An from 30 December to 2 January, so you get New Year's Eve here plus the quieter lantern nights either side.
What the night looks like
Lanterns everywhere
Hoi An's Old Town is a UNESCO-listed trading port where the lanterns go up every evening, not just on festival nights. On New Year's Eve the streets add lantern-lit photo spots and Tet-style decorations, and the core lanes are largely pedestrian in the evening, so the Old Town works as one big walking street.
Boats and floating lanterns
The classic Hoi An moment is a small wooden boat on the Hoai River at night, dropping a paper flower lantern into the water and making a wish. On New Year's Eve the river is busy with them. Boats are shared with your friends and usually run 15–45 minutes.
The riverside show
The town's free celebration has centred on the An Hoi side of the river in recent years: a stage show, then a short fireworks display around midnight. The 31 December 2026 programme isn't announced yet, so check locally on the day.
Bars and street food
The riverfront bars and lounges along the Hoai fill up with beer, cocktails and music, and the night-market stalls on the An Hoi side keep going late. Cao lau noodles, banh mi and white rose dumplings are the local dishes to try.
One thing that trips people up: Hoi An's famous full-moon lantern festival is held on the 14th day of each lunar month. That's around 22 December 2026 and around 21 January 2027 (sources differ by a day), so it isn't on New Year's Eve. The lanterns, boats and floating candles still happen every night.
Crowds: honest expectations
Late December is high season in central Vietnam, and New Year's Eve is the busiest night of the week. Expect the An Hoi bridge and the riverbanks to be packed from about 8pm, slow-moving lanes, and full restaurants.
- Eat early, around 7pm, or book a table if there's somewhere specific you want.
- Do your boat ride before 9pm, when queues and prices are lower.
- Agree a meeting point with your group. Phones die and the network slows down in crowds.
- Agree boat and drink prices before you start. Some operators add a holiday surcharge.

Where our group is, night by night
30 Dec (Day 3)
Arrive in Hoi An
Morning flight from Ho Chi Minh City to Da Nang, the Marble Mountains, then Hoi An. Check in and walk the Old Town as the lanterns come on.
31 Dec (Day 4)
Ba Na Hills, then NYE in Hoi An
Full day at Ba Na Hills: cable car, Golden Hand Bridge, French Village, Fantasy Park. Back in Hoi An for the night. No ticketed party in the package; the Trip Leader plans the evening with the group.
1 Jan (Day 5)
Basket boats and lanterns
Basket boat ride through the Coconut Forest, a free afternoon in town, then an evening lantern boat ride on the river.
2 Jan (Day 6)
Fly to Hanoi
Flight from Da Nang to Hanoi for the Old Quarter, Train Street and Beer Street, then Ha Long Bay on 3 Jan.
Honest take: 31 December is a long day. Ba Na Hills is a full outing from Hoi An, so you're back in town in the evening with legs that have done some walking. The night itself is relaxed and lantern-lit rather than a big organised party, and the trip's louder nights are Bui Vien Street in Saigon at the start and Beer Street in Hanoi after.
Weather and what to pack
Hoi An in late December is mild and often damp: daytime highs in the low to mid-20s °C, evenings around 18–21°C, and high humidity. It's the tail of the rainy season, with roughly 15 rainy days in an average December, though usually as showers rather than all-day rain.
Pack a light rain jacket, a layer for the evening, and shoes you don't mind getting wet. You'll need the jacket again in Hanoi and Ha Long Bay, which are cooler still.
Typical late-December conditions, not a forecast.
Before you fly: the Vietnam e-visa
Indians need an e-visa for Vietnam: US$25 for single entry, applied for online, usually 3–5 working days. For the 28 December departure, apply by early December at the latest. Our Vietnam e-visa guide walks through each step. Still deciding where to spend New Year? See Vietnam vs Thailand for New Year 2027.
FAQ
Is Hoi An good for New Year's Eve?
Yes, if you want atmosphere rather than a mega-party. The Old Town is lit with silk lanterns every night, the Hoai River fills with lantern boats, and the town puts on a free open-air show. For the 2026 countdown it was a gala at the An Hoi Sculpture Garden with a low-altitude fireworks display, according to Da Nang's official tourism site. It's busy and festive, but it isn't a club night. If you want a big ticketed beach party, Thailand's Koh Phangan is the better pick.
Are there fireworks in Hoi An on New Year's Eve?
There have been in recent years. Hoi An Ward ran a low-altitude fireworks display for New Year 2026 as part of its riverside celebration. The programme for 31 December 2026 hasn't been announced yet, so treat fireworks as likely but not guaranteed, and expect a modest display rather than a skyline show.
Is the Hoi An lantern festival on New Year's Eve?
No. The monthly full-moon lantern night falls on the 14th day of each lunar month, which is around 22 December 2026 and around 21 January 2027 (sources differ by a day). Neither falls on New Year's Eve. You don't miss much: the Old Town's lanterns are lit every evening, and boats and floating lanterns run every night.
How crowded is Hoi An at New Year?
Very, around the river after dark. Late December is high season and New Year's Eve is the busiest night of the week, so the bridges and riverbanks near An Hoi get packed and restaurants fill up. Eat early, book a table if there's somewhere specific you want, and agree a meeting point with your group in case phones die or the network slows down.
What's the weather like in Hoi An in late December?
Mild and often damp. Expect daytime highs in the low to mid-20s °C and evenings around 18–21°C, with high humidity. December is the tail of the rainy season, and long-run records average around 15 rainy days in the month. Pack a light rain jacket and a layer for the evening.
Do I need a ticket to walk around Hoi An Old Town?
The Ancient Town ticket is 120,000 VND (about ₹440) for foreign visitors in 2026, and it covers entry to the protected heritage buildings, such as the Japanese Covered Bridge area, old houses and assembly halls. Recent guides say you can walk the lanes and the riverfront without one, but rules at the booths can change, so check when you arrive.
Do Indians need a visa for Vietnam?
Yes. Indian passport holders apply online for an e-visa, which costs US$25 for single entry and usually takes 3–5 working days, longer around holidays. For the 28 December departure, apply by early December at the latest.
